But more to the point, I figured I had plenty of time. I dated. It was challenging. When a boyfriend of four years abruptly walked out on me, I realized that finding a life partner was about so much more than love. Meanwhile, I had decided to pursue a career in science, and I knew from watching my female mentors that I would probably be battling institutionalized and internalized sexism for the rest of my career.

The Perils of Dating a PhD Student (or: an Honest Academic’s Dating Profile… )
I have been dating an awesome guy for a little over a year now. He is extremely intelligent and genuinely interested in my research work, and I like hearing wild stories from the club he works at. And besides, we have a lot of shared interests, like programming, caving, and gaming, where we are at similar levels of accomplishment and feel like we can challenge each other. When I first met Boyfriend, my out-of-town friends told me I needed to be aiming higher.
They spend date nights writing new theorems; I spend date nights playing Starcraft. I already have a lot of anxiety about my career.

Our schedules are flexible, though our workloads still higher.
To non-academics, this workload is often misunderstood or misinterpreted. Working in a coffee shop is still working! Yet, partners can also be helpful and supportive to the academic lifestyle. I spent a lovely evening a couple of years ago having dinner with the R. Yes, I live a complicated life. Interactions between the students of the University and those administrators, faculty and staff who have institutional authority over them are to be guided by mutual trust, confidence, and professional ethics. Any consensual relationship between a student on the one hand and any faculty member, administrator, or staff member on the other has the potential to put these values at risk.
Likewise, familial or collegial relationships such as holding a position of authority over one’s children, one’s colleagues, or family members of colleagues may lead to the reality or the perception of bias. The University calls the attention of all members of the University community to these dangers, and notes the appropriateness of existing grievance procedures for dealing with abuses that may arise in all these situations. In this policy, the University wishes to deal with the specific issue of consensual relationships in which one of the parties holds a position of authority over the other.
The power differential characterizing such relationships creates the risk of conflicts of interest, violations of trust, abuses of power, and breaches of professional ethics. The Policy on Consensual Relationships is intended to guard against such risks while protecting the rights of all parties. Acts or allegations of harassment shall be handled in accordance with the University’s Harassment Policy, which shall take precedence over this policy with respect to such acts or allegations.

Out of the numerous grad students and professors I have dated, I would say about have had problems with normal life activities similar in magnitude to this guy, and whereas it didn’t bother me very much, most of the time I was like, WTF.
People in academia just seem so anxious about everything, in a way that people in other high-stakes high-profile jobs such as finance or medicine aren’t. It really makes one reconsider the precariousness of academic life.
