Aimed at providing a better understanding and knowledge of acoustics, sound integration and digital audio networking and signal processing in worship, the conference saw three presenters flown in. Using a church design example as well as referencing a number of other AFC installations around the world including one of four currently in Singapore. Mr Hashimoto was able to explain the benefits of flexibly and cost-effectively improving room acoustics by means of DSP rather than by altering a room mechanically. Looking Back on 50 Years of Yamaha Guitars

Ever wonder exactly when your favorite guitar was made? You sort of remember when you got it, but you want to really know its history, especially if you’re not the first owner. Here’s a brief rundown of how to do it, plus resources for more information.

Throughout the late Seventies and Eighties, Yamaha SG models appeared To date, it remains the most expensive guitar built by the Yamaha.

Yamaha occupies a surprisingly unusual niche in the guitar industry. The company, which is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its presence on the American market and export to other countries beyond Japan, has consistently produced guitars that have sold in impressive numbers and attracted a notable following of celebrity players and esteemed pros.

Yet the success of Yamaha guitars is influenced more by their reputation for high quality and the outstanding value their instruments offer for the money than by the usual forms of guitar hero worship that drive many guitar sales. As a result, Yamaha has quietly satisfied the needs of all walks of players from beginner to pro while an ever-changing parade of trendier instruments have hogged the spotlight.

Although Yamaha was originally founded in to produce pianos and organs, the company did not start building guitars until the early Forties, eventually opening a factory dedicated exclusively to guitar construction in Hamamatsu in the late Forties. By the mid Sixties, the entire world had a fever called Beatlemania, and the only prescription was more guitars. The United States was particularly stricken, and domestic guitar companies struggled to keep up with the increasing demand for anything with six strings.

To satisfy customers, particularly those on tight middle class budgets, retailers turned to Asian manufacturers to fill their shelves with affordable, low-cost instruments. The phenomenal increase in demand for guitars was very beneficial to Yamaha. The company already had more than two decades of experience building guitars, and the decision was made to pursue these new opportunities in a grand fashion.

In , Yamaha sold their first export models, which consisted of the G50, G60, G80, G, G and G classical guitars, all produced at their Hamamatsu factory. That same year, Yamaha established a custom shop dedicated to the production of the finest instruments they could make, and they started to collaborate with outside experts. Their first collaboration was with Spanish guitar builder Eduardo Ferrer, who helped Yamaha refine the designs of its classical guitar models.

At the same time during the mid Sixties, Yamaha expanded its production by offering its first steel-string and electric models, including bass guitars.

Read the current issue of VG. Of all the excellent — and generally unheralded — guitars built by Yamaha over the years, none has achieved quite the legendary status as the Yamaha SG SBG , based primarily because of its association early on with Carlos Santana. These were bolt-neck guitars with slab bodies in the Yamaha SG shape, reminiscent of a Gibson SG, with small pickguards and twin humbuckers with black plastic covers.

He became famous in the late s and early s with his band, Santana, which pioneered rock, Latin music and jazz fusion. Santana continued to work in these forms over the following decades. He experienced a resurgence of popularity and critical acclaim in the late s. In the late 60s he played mostly Gibson SG Specials with P90 pickups, and with the beginning of the 70s he migrated towards Les Pauls and more beefy humbucker sound.

By December when Santana played at Altamont, the guitar was almost completely stripped down of its original paint and the tremolo was removed leaving visible screw holes. Since we know that his two SG Specials also had the tremolo piece, it is possible that the Maestro from this guitar ended up on one of his SGs. It featured cherry red finish, Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, two P90 single-coil pickups, Grover tuners, ABR-1 Tune-o-matic bridge and a wrap-around stop-tailpiece.

But, this sounds unlikely. That being said, it is quite possible that this is the same guitar as the black SG he was using in , just without the white P90s and the tremolo bridge.

Yamaha’s latest monitors may look like the classic NS10s, but looks can be deceiving The passive, sealed-box Yamaha NS10 is something of a studio icon, and it’s an image that Yamaha seem to be capitalising on, with the white speaker cones of their new HS7 model. Built into rear-ported, rigid MDF cabinets x x mm with jointed corners, the 6. Finned heat sinks are fitted to the rear panel and, again, these need to be unobstructed to allow proper cooling. There’s been no attempt to ward off cabinet-edge diffraction as all the baffle edges have been left square, even though the upper and lower corners of the box are rounded.

On the rear panel are controls to adjust The HS7 features controls for adjusting the speaker’s bass and treble response. Putting this in perspective, though, these are relatively low-cost speakers that perform well given their price range. Most importantly, the HS7s are not NS10s, they are very much their own speaker regardless of the cosmetics. Despite its relatively small driver, the HS8S added plenty of depth at levels perfectly adequate for nearfield monitoring setups, though I’d still have liked a footswitch option to bypass the sub and feed full-range signals to the mains.

There were absolutely no rattles or other untoward sounds, and because the crossover can be adjusted it should work perfectly well with other brands of powered monitor too. In this price range the HS7s compete with the likes of Alesis, Fostex, Tannoy, Presonus, Prodipe and some of the budget Mackie models, all of which have their own character.

Like all Yamaha products, these speakers are well engineered and perform well compared with similarly priced competitors. They are very different from NS10s, but that shouldn’t stop you checking them out.
